Wine 101: Corsica

Approximately 250 million years ago, in the Mediterranean Sea off the southeast coast of France, a large formation of granite rose from the water. Fast-forward about 200 million years and sedimentary rock pushed up against this granite, forming the mountainous island of Corsica.

Eons later, it was discovered by the Phoenicians who brought grape vines to the island. However, between the 12th and16th centuries, Italy’s Republic of Genoa claimed ownership of Corsica and passed laws that prevented any other nation from importing the island’s wines, thus hindering its popularity. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Corsica’s wind industry was able to hit the ground running. Now, it’s one of France’s 18 wine regions, encompassing nine appellations of its own.

On this episode of “Wine 101,” we take a quick break from deep dives to answer a listener’s request and talk about the wine region of Corsica and all of its amazing wines. Tune in for more.
