Last week on “Wine 101,” Keith left off as a young Arnaud III de Pontac was learning the family winemaking business at Château Haut-Brion. In 1649, then an adult, he took over the château. At that time, Bordeaux was known for its light-style wines, which the British called “claret.” The style came about because 17th-century winemakers in the region preferred a short maceration period, resulting in a rather clear liquid.
When Arnaud III took ownership of Haut-Brion, however, he saw something he thought he could change. He wanted wine to be seen as a luxury product — a possibility that no one had considered for the beverage before.
Today on “Wine 101,” Keith shares the third installment on the history of Château Haut-Brion. He gets into how a civil war in England impacted the growing wine-producing business in Bordeaux and how, once the smoke abroad cleared, Arnaud III changed the world of wine forever.
