Cabernet Sauvignon came to singularly define Napa Valley in the late 1900s, turning the area from a region with grape-growing potential to one with worldwide renown for stellar Bordeaux-style wines. As a swarm of wide-eyed winemakers flocked to the burgeoning region in the 1970s, many took to Cabernet Sauvignon for its marketability.

But when the U.S. initiated the AVA system, lawmakers made an important decision: Unlike Europe’s mandated regions, America’s viticultural demarcations would not restrict the grape varieties producers could grow. That choice allowed for experimentation and entrepreneurship — an opportunity that Joseph Phelps took advantage of when he opened his winery in 1973. Yes, Phelps produced Bordeaux-style blends as a reliable way to make a profit, but he always had a vision for Syrah, a grape that Napa had barely seen at the time.

Today on “Wine 101,” host Keith Beavers dives into the story of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Keith explains how a construction project led Phelps to fall in love with viticulture and how two bold moves cemented his place in American winemaking history.
