When describing their products, producers commonly say something along the lines of “90 percent of my wine is made in the vineyard.” Those statements are their way of explaining that many of the agricultural and viticultural decisions made when growing the grapes are what most impact the quality of the wine.
Consumers like to hear it because it reminds them that wine is rooted in the earth, but for anyone who knows anything about winemaking, the statement is eyeroll-inducing.
