In 1958, Mike Grgich fled Communist Yugoslavia with the dream of making wine in the U.S. He had little money, and trekking that far required multiple stops and jobs along the way. Four years later, he arrived in California with nothing but a suitcase and a passion for viticulture. Soon after, Grgich became the head winemaker at Chateau Montelena — and his work there would come to define American wine.
Today on “Wine 101,” host Keith Beavers recounts Mike Grgich’s journey from Yugoslavia to California. How did he work his way to Chateau Montelena? How did a man from such humble beginnings go on to change the wine world forever?
